Mixed Signals, Not so Mixed Results

In recent times I found myself wondering about of missiles, and missile systems. These stockpiles of lethal weapons.

Missiles can be many things. Those we use to launch things into Space and do amazing things and those we use in warfare to inflict horrific carnage… Missiles that inspire when they blast off their launch pads under unbelievable raw power and travel to the stars, to those missile systems on mobile vehicles that unleash indescribable destruction.

What’s interesting here about these high-velocity systems is their utter dependency on complex integrated guidance technology.

Sophisticated guidance systems are, by their nature autonomous, in they operate internally once they are fired, or follow pre-programmed guidance parameters. These are highly precise targeting mechanisms and can achieve great accuracy despite the distances involved.  Witness NASA’s recent inspiring and somewhat reassuring success, at tracking a small chunk of rock, orbiting millions of kilometers out in space, with complex differentials in trajectories and orbital mechanics, and yet could hit it with pinpoint accuracy. Such is the finesse we’ve developed in tracking and targeting fast-moving objects.

Therefore, it’s no major deal by those standards, to launch a missile from a silo in Kansas, in Continental US, and take out a target in any part of the world.

Again, these launch vehicles are mere pieces of steel without the electronic brains to guide them. What makes war missiles so lethal is their precision- built guidance package that gyroscopically manages the flight-path to its intended target.

So, this begs an interesting question.

How hard would it be, to develop a technology that would deter an aggressor to reflect long and hard about initiating a pre-emptive attack? To think twice –if they knew a counter-strike capability existed, and one with a nasty sting in the tail. This super-technology would harness all the technology developed from deep-space communications and tracking: and employ this to tamper with the internal guidance mechanism, compute the origin of the launch vehicle source, and direct the missile’s guidance chips to “return to origin”.

In effect, switch the launch coordinates to the target coordinates, and send the offensive missile back home to where it originated. Such a development would throw the entire aggressive nature of offensive military doctrines into a tailspin. Essentially a Pandora’s Box if you will, where first-strike naked aggression would be faced with the prospect that their own weapon systems being turned against them. Their own rockets would rain down on them, without the other side needing to launch a counter-strike.

In today’s sophisticated cyber systems, where highly secure data-centers and computing clusters are breached, all too regularly by hackers, what would a highly coordinated technology group be capable of, if it looked at building the ability to neutralizing offensive missile  guidance systems?  To counter the missile’s trajectory, possibly employing satellite networks and laser aiming radar to hack the guidance package in the missile. In effect creating a game-changer in the use of missiles for warfare purposes. Maybe even label it, ABT, advanced boomerang technology!

*In, Chronicles of Time, the unexpected mystical appearance of the Turin Shroud in the opening chapter has an ominous significance, but is not so obvious or apparent at the beginning. A Shroud, by another name, transpires to be something far more potent and far-reaching for all of the main characters.

At its core, emerges an ability to disrupt the detonation of nuclear warheads by unknown mystical energy, altering critical atomic structures within the fission process. In effect, a Nuclear Shroud. Such interventions, however, as the story unfolds, come at a high price.
